I’ve been coming to Six Degrees for Community Acupuncture for a while now. How do I choose between these two Community Acupuncture options?

The main difference between Community Acupuncture and Community Acupuncture with Health Education, is the time you get to spend with your Acupuncturist to discuss your health concerns, lifestyle, diet, and other recommendations that you might want or need.

Community Acupuncture with Health Education is the same service we have always offered, if you want to keep receiving care with time to talk about what is happening and what you can do in your day to day life to contribute to your health, then please book this session.

With the second option, simply named Community Acupuncture, we ask you concise relevant questions and take tongue and pulse to assess you at every visit. You receive a complete and effective treatment with less time to talk. You may prefer less talking or need to choose this option for any number of reasons. Either way the quality of Acupuncture does not change. Instead of talking more about what is happening we will share knowledge with you through info sheets as needed and ongoing appointments.

What about NADA? Do you still offer Ear Acupuncture?

Yes, you can still book a NADA Ear Acupuncture treatment at any time during all Community Acupuncture hours. We are open 6 days a week to offer you NADA, Community Acupuncture and Community Acupuncture with Health Education. We are phasing out the NADA pass which is no longer available for purchase, effective immediately. Clients who have a NADA pass can continue using it until all treatment quota are used up.

……………………………………………………
How long are these treatments and how are we using that time at each treatment?

At each treatment you will be assessed and then have time to rest with needles in. The length of assessment depends on the type of treatment you are getting while the length of the total treatment stays the same. To ensure ideal treatment time we ask you to arrive 10-15 minutes before their session begins and, for first appointments, fill out the online health history before you arrive. If you need it, you can ask for a shorter treatment to fit it into your schedule. Below we list out the duration of each type of treatments.
NADA: 35-60 minutes, including 2 minute assessment
Community Acupuncture: 45-60 minutes, including 10 minute assessment
Community Acupuncture with Health Education: 60 minutes, including 15 minute assessment and health education
Private Acupuncture: 60 minutes, including 15-25 minute assessment and health education or cupping as needed
First Community or Private Acupuncture: In addition to the above times, there is an additional 15 minutes for your initial assessment when you book a first appointment for Community or Private Acupuncture

It’s my first time at Six Degrees. How do I choose which service I need?

When you come in for your first time assessment, we will discuss your treatment plan and help you decide what is best for you based on your needs, budget and preference. When you book your first appointment, you only have to decide if you prefer getting your treatment in a community setting (in a recliner in a shared studio), or a private setting (on a massage table in a private room).

How do you decide what I need based on my health condition?

Inclusive of your health history information, our assessment questions, taking your pulse, looking at your tongue and prioritizing your main area(s) of concern, we will suggest a treatment plan that can be met through multiple streams of the services we offer. This is what Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine is known for – we are thorough and offer a holistic approach to your care. At Six Degrees this extends beyond the medicine training we undergo and includes awareness of economics, systemic oppression, scheduling commitments and as much as your whole self as we can include.

I can only afford the $30 option but I would love to have some information about how I could change my diet and lifestyle too. Is there a way to make it happen?

For sure! We have many options for your whole care.

We have info sheets we can share with you and at every Community Acupuncture session there is some amount of time to ask a question or get clarification on the info we have shared.

We offer Eastern Nutrition Consultations ($50) to focus on diet and how to use food as medicine. You can book this just once and receive a lot of info for your daily health practices and self care.
We can also use a combination of services to meet your budget needs. For example: You may book one Community Acupuncture with Health Education ($50) to have that conversation and then use the Community Acupuncture ($30) to receive ongoing care.

At your first appointment, for either Community or Private Acupuncture, you receive a thorough assessment and treatment plan. We will spend 20-30 minutes going over what you want to work on, what we are doing and why, and ways you can start to address your health with TCM guidance in your day to day life.

Why are you no longer using the sliding scale?

We are innovating community health to be accessible and sustainable. By adjusting the fee of our current Community Acupuncture service (now called Community Acupuncture with Health Education) to a fixed rate of $50, we are able to offer a second Community Acupuncture option at a rate of $30. In addition, we have a NADA option at a rate of $15 and Private Acupuncture at a rate of $70. We encourage and support our clients to choose their service based on their need, budget and preference. You may use one type of service, or a combination of several to meet your need. Acupuncture, no matter the setting, works well to address many health conditions.

With the financial realities we are facing we were going to have to raise the entire sliding scale rate, but with this new model, we can better adapt to inflation and rising costs while still offering effective and affordable treatment. Our new pricing reflects the time and resources that each type of service takes to deliver, without compromising the quality of the service. By applying the economics of a sliding scale model more broadly to all acupuncture services at Six Degrees, we will be able to keep our doors open and keep co-creating a model of community health care that is sustainable for decades, offering more and more communities effective and affordable Holistic and Traditional Medicine.

I used to come here twice a week. How can I still afford multiple treatments in one week with the new pricing?

In order for Six Degrees to be sustainable, and after deep consideration, we can no longer offer a lower fee for multiple treatments in one week.
Our remedy for this reality is to work with you to develop a treatment plan that can meet your needs. We have created the $30 Community Acupuncture option to meet some of this need. We also have been working more and more with the NADA Ear Acupuncture protocol. For some disharmonies, this is a great second treatment in one week option to stabilize the nervous system and offer pain relief. We encourage you to speak with your practitioner to discuss how this change will impact your care. We are committed to being as accessible and effective as possible, so please reach out so we can build your treatment plan and make it work for you.

I just want to be directed in what to do, can you do that?

Yes, for sure! If you are coming for your first time, just book a first time appointment in the community or private setting, fill out your health history form online or on a tablet at Six Degrees before your scheduled time and off we go! Or, if you are an ongoing client, just ask your practitioner how to best use our Acupuncture services for your current health concerns. You do not need a first time appt to have a check in with your practitioner, you can do this during a Community Acupuncture, or if you want more time to talk, just book a Community Acupuncture with Health Education or Private Acupuncture appointment.

……………………………………………………
Is there any difference between the consultation part in First Community Acupuncture and First Private Acupuncture?

The biggest difference is the setting. In private Acupuncture we speak in a private treatment room whereas in the community setting there may be anywhere from 0-6 other people in the room. Having said that the Community room is still quite private – we speak in hushed tones and use discreet language to ensure our confidentiality and privacy.
It really comes down to our overall offer of working with clients based on their needs, budget and preference. You will need to have a consult to receive care and for us to know what we are working on, your budget contributes to what is possible and your preference comes in to ensure you are as comfortable as you can be. For some the private setting is financially possible but they prefer to be in the community room and reduce feeling isolated. For others the private initial consultation feels mandatory even if it strains their budget and they do a private consult and then move into the community room for follow up treatments.

This is a big change and I feel overwhelmed! Can I talk with someone to decide how to maintain my health care?

Yes absolutely! We understand that the new model is quite different from how we’ve been operating in the last 11 years. As a small business, we strive to develop a model that works for our clients, and one that would allow Six Degrees to continue doing its rad work in the next 10 years and beyond! If you have any question about how to proceed with the new options, please do get in touch with us by phone, email, or talk to us in person. Our front desk staff will be able to support you. In addition, you are also welcomed to book a Community Acupuncture with Health Education appointment to speak with our acupuncturists about your treatment plan, to ensure that you are getting the treatments that you need within your needs, budget, schedule and preference.
