When I work with clients as a career coach, I like to start by acknowledging that our jobs impact almost all aspects of our lives, including health. Mental health. Physical health. Emotional well-being.
If your job is impacting your health, what can you do?
Start with you. Identify what you want and need.
This is not to ignore any of the systemic barriers that may exist in your job situation and place the burden solely on the individual, it’s to encourage reconnecting with yourself.
It’s easy to get disconnected from what you need, especially if your organization expects you to prioritise your job over everything.
I’m not saying don’t settle for anything less than you #dreamjob, I’m saying identify what you need and want to be healthy and engaged. Because when we don’t know what we need, we can’t seek it out.
Should you stay or should you go?
How can you get those needs met in your current job?
This may be the scary part because If you realize that your current job can’t meet your needs, it may mean that you need to enter into the job search world or switch careers entirely.
Coffee chats: A gentler way to job search & explore careers
More effective than resumes and job postings is focusing on getting connected or recommended for a job.
After you’ve prepared the building blocks of what you want and how to market your experience, you can connect with cold and warm contacts in these areas for coffee chats to explore career options and/or job search.
You get to tell your story about your experience instead of a resume doing it (this is incredibly useful for folks with non-linear careers or generalists).
You get to assess whether the role and/or organization is a good fit for you.
You get to bypass the often-biassed hiring processes of online applications.
You get to shift the power imbalance (because it’s not a job interview).
It can be! Here are 3 ways I can help:
